#2 Minute Read.
Knuckles, Knees, Elbows, Ankles and nearly every other jount can crack. Is it potentially Arthritis, the answer yes & no. The reason that it was considered that cracking joint caused Arthritis is because there is a very similar symptom that people with Arthritis present with, which is known as crepitus. What’s the difference between crepitus and cracking joints?
Crepitus is caused by the contact between bone and bone as the layers of between the joints degenerate. This typically occurs in the later stages of Arthritis, but, some clients may have crepitus earlier on. Crepitus itself can be excruciatingly painful and can often be heard and felt durign movements. In addition to this, clients with Arthritis will present with a multitude of other symptoms such as stiffness, pain, swelling, redness and reduced range of movement.
On the other hand, cracking your joints (although, it may provide you relief), often is painless. The reason behind this is that rather than the layers between the joints degenerating, the cracks that are heard are the release of air bubbles which can form between the joints.
Overall, just cracking your joints will not cause Arthritis, however, if you experience any other symptoms mentioned above such as pain, reduce range of movement, stiffness, swelling or others, then it may be advisable to consult your clinician.
